No obstacle is too great for Rebecca Thoms.
A single mom of three kids ages five and under, Rebecca is used to chaos. When a life-threatening infection in June of 2018 nearly derailed her goals, Rebecca fought back harder than ever.
"After two knee surgeries to get rid of a staph infection, I had to relearn how to walk. At the same time, I was trying to take care of three kids, crawling down the stairs in our home to get to the laundry room. It was tough, but mentally, I couldn't have done it without my kids," recalls Rebecca.
Rebecca didn't know if she would be able to return to Briar Cliff for the fall 2018 semester. Somehow, she prevailed and returned to continue her degree in English education with a certification in special education. Her future goal is to become a voice for special education students. When she graduates, Rebecca will become the first teacher in her family.
"You should never interrupt someone doing something you said they couldn't do," she says with a smile.
It's a motto that someone should make sure to tell anything that stands in Rebecca's way.
